Adverts, pop-ups and sidebars make long articles hard work. Immersive Reader strips the page back to just the text, so you can take it in properly.
Step by step
- Open the article you want to read.
- Press F9 to enter Immersive Reader.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+U to have the page read aloud.
- Press F9 again to exit.
Tips & troubleshooting
- Immersive Reader is only available on pages Edge recognises as articles.
- On many laptops you need Fn+F9.
Other ways in
- Click the book icon at the right of the address bar. It appears only on pages Edge recognises as articles.
- Select some text, right-click and choose Open selection in Immersive Reader. This works on pages where the icon is missing.
- Type read: in front of the address, before the https, and press Enter to try to force a page into the reader.
The tools along the top
- Read aloud: reads the text with a choice of voices and speeds, highlighting each word as it goes.
- Text preferences: text size, spacing between letters and lines, column width and page colour. A cream or dark background is easier on tired eyes.
- Grammar tools: split words into syllables and colour nouns, verbs and adjectives, which helps language learners.
- Reading preferences: Line focus dims everything except one, three or five lines; Picture dictionary shows an image for a word you click; Translate converts the page or single words into another language.
Who it helps
- Anyone reading a long article on a cluttered site.
- People with dyslexia or visual stress, who benefit from wider spacing, shorter lines and a tinted page.
- People reading in a second language, using translation and the picture dictionary.
- Anyone who wants a clean printout: press Ctrl+P inside the reader and only the article prints, without adverts or menus.
- People who take in information better by listening. Ctrl+Shift+U starts Read aloud on any page, with or without the reader.

Immersive Reader is also built into Word (View, Immersive Reader), OneNote, Outlook and Teams messages, with the same tools. On a Mac the Edge shortcut is also F9.
