Closing the wrong tab happens to everyone. You don't need to dig through your history, because one shortcut brings it straight back.
Step by step
- In the browser window, press Ctrl+Shift+T.
- Your most recently closed tab reopens, including its back history.
- Press it again to reopen the tab closed before that, and so on.
Tips & troubleshooting
- If you closed a whole window, Ctrl+Shift+T restores the entire window with all its tabs.
- Ctrl+H opens your full history if the tab was closed a long time ago.
Other ways to get a tab back
- Right-click an empty part of the tab bar and choose Reopen closed tab.
- Press Ctrl+H to open History and look under Recently closed. This is better when you want one specific tab from several you closed.
- Type a word from the page's title in the address bar. Edge suggests matching pages from your history.
- On another device signed in to the same account, open History and choose Tabs from other devices.
What comes back, and what doesn't
- The page reopens in its old position on the tab bar, with its back and forward history intact.
- A closed window returns with all of its tabs.
- After a crash or a restart, Ctrl+Shift+T restores the windows from the previous session.
- Text typed into a form is often lost, because many pages reload from scratch.
- InPrivate tabs can't be reopened. Once an InPrivate window is closed, its history is gone, which is the point of it.
Stop losing tabs in the first place
- Pin the tabs you always need: right-click the tab and choose Pin tab. Pinned tabs shrink to an icon, have no close button and reopen with the browser.
- Have Edge reopen where you left off: Settings, Start, home, and new tabs, then Open tabs from the previous session.
- Group related tabs: right-click a tab and add it to a group, so a project's pages can be collapsed instead of closed.
- Remember that Ctrl+W closes the current tab and Ctrl+Shift+W closes the whole window. One slip of the Shift key is how most windows are lost.
In other browsers
Ctrl+Shift+T does the same in Chrome, Firefox, Brave and Opera. On a Mac it is Cmd+Shift+T.
